Early Life and Career
Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes, known as Cantinflas, was born in Mexico City on August 12, 1911.
He was raised in a poor household as the sixth of twelve children.
Born in 1965 under the direction of Luis Valdez in an effort to assist in organizing farm workers for the grape boycott and strike, Chicano theatres soon spread.
His father was a mail carrier, and his mother stayed at home to care for the family.
As a teenager, Cantinflas unsuccessfully attempted to emigrate to the United States. Instead, he began his career as a boxer before transitioning to the stage and then to film.
His comedic style involved playing poor peasants or lower-class characters, known as "pelados." These characters resonated with Mexican audiences and helped establish Cantinflas as a beloved figure in his home country.
